Oddly enough, I never have. But I'm young yet. I think the failure of ambition here lies with the club: they've given a 35 year old a five-year contract. Now, by dropping two divisions, Campbell has basically admitted he's not good enough for the Premier League any more - fair enough, it's a very physically-demanding league, and he's not as fast as he was. But while it's possible that he wouldn't have been offered £40k a week at any any club in the Championship, which is surely his level, I think he would (surely Newcastle would stump up, if they lose Taylor?). What Campbell *wouldn't* get would be a contract for more than two years. After those two years, he'd be looking at a reduction in income, and another drop of division.
So essentially, Campbell has done the reasonable thing and guaranteed his income for five years. Notts County, by contrast, have signed an expensive and rapidly depreciating asset for an ill-advised length of time. If they get promoted next season, he'll be less useful than this season. And if they get promoted again (didn't Sven say he wanted to be in the Premier League in five years?) they're looking at having a 37-year-old who's not good enough for the division hanging around on £2m p.a...
