I know why we're struggling to get promoted, it's because we didn't beat
Huddersfield away from home.

During the second division days of the mid eighties a Huddersfield fan told me
that we wouldn't get promoted until we'd beaten them at Leeds Road. As it
turned out, we finally went up in 1989/90 when we no longer had to play them,
as by then they had gone down to the old third division. We never did beat them
away in that second division spell.

The legend even holds good if we go back further into the past. We beat
Huddersfield away in 1963/4, and in every other promotion season we've ever had
they weren't in the same division at the time.

Which brings us to our current spell in 'League One'. We failed to beat them at
the Galpharm in either of the first two seasons, and of course failed to get
promoted. DuringĀ  the match last month I thought with 10 minutes to go that we
were going to break the curse, but of course they shattered my hopes with that
equaliser.

So our only hope of promotion this year is if we get a second chance to beat
Huddersfield away in the play-off semi-finals...
