For many voters across Leeds, there was more than one ballot paper to be filled
in on Thursday 6 May 2010.
While the General Election has hogged the headlines for weeks, many local
council seats were also being decided.
It's thought that voting on the same day as the General Election, should have
had a significant effect on voter turnout.
Traditionally local elections struggle to match the turnout for national
elections.
One third of seats were up for election for Leeds City Council and Labour were
the biggest gainers, adding four seats to their previous total of 44.
The BNP lost their only councillor as Shirley Varley of the Morley Borough
Inedpendents ousted Chris Beverley in the Morley South ward.
Despite Labour's gains, the council is still in No Overall Control, but they
will look to form alliances to replace the current five year
Conservative/Liberal Democrat coalition.
