Depression is very different to the transient episodes of low mood that you seem to have in mind. It has firm diagnostic criteria and and can be a fatal illness. And of course, depression is just one form of mental illness. Mania, for example, is anything but a shade of unhappiness, and schizophrenia is completely different from those affective disorders.
