>>Or even the figures given for wages here were a load of claptrap (most
probably ;))<<
Complete and utter!
Lower league players earn nothing like the figures quoted. A 3rd or 4th
division player at a typical club earns a decent annual salary - probably
between £50,000 and £100,000. A young player on a first contract with Exeter
or Crewe or Rochdale will earn less - £30k maybe.
That's PER YEAR, not per week. Don't expect there are even any
Championship teams now paying stupid money. (Except Cardiff). A championship
player
might be able to secure a five-year deal worth a million pounds. Which is
about £5k a week.
If you look at the likes of Stoke and Wigan (well-run prem clubs that have
stayed up, while working within their means) you'll find they will be
paying many of their players well under £10k pw.
Beckford's agent will have been able to negotiate a decent deal as there
was no transfer fee - £4m over four years (probably includes signing-on fee)
equates to £16k pw. Probably about right - might be less.
That's similar to buying a player for £2m and paying £8k pw.
Remember Seth Johnson? Hoping to get a big one - maybe £10,000 a week, but
would settle for £8,000 - from a perceived "big" club?
That's £400,000 per year - maybe a four-year contract worth £1.6m.
Of course the imbecile Ridsdale started the bidding at £30k pw. That
lesson has been learned by (most) clubs. But not Hull and Portsmouth, which
both
have ended up in the championship with a crippled balance sheet.
Portsmouth will get further points docked this coming season and I wouldn't be
surprised if Hull don't fall into receivership too.
