OK Great to look at a team objectively. That's what I can do for England I'll be glad if they go thro' because of the Leeds boys and glad if they don't because we are Scots affiliated in this family [ University at Aberdeen + an Aberdonian wife]. Honestly guys look at the team: No goalie. One full back at least unsuited to play at this level. One over rated centre half [ Terry ] & one non existent centre half [Carrigan] That's a defence which is a disaster waiting to happen. The midfield -- Gerrard and Lampard are yet to show that they can play together. IMO both are overrated and at best good club players. Lampard is a one trick pony. A great trick but it hasn't come off too well at the national level.I never liked Gerrard as he plays for L'Pool. Milner is still looking to find his role and worries me as being a Jack of all trades. Barry: again a lot of hype. The guy is injured and or recuperating has had a poor season and not lived up to his transfer fee. To make him the messiah is a wee bit rich. The forwards: Lennon [who has not added much to his game since leaving ER] can split a defense but cannot pass. Wright Phillips is fast and yet does not manage to impact. There is no real partner for Rooney in fact his role is far from clear. Heskey is a bloody joke. The guy cant get a regular game in the Villa team. In short a hell of a lot of rubbish players. A hell of a lot of problems in every aspect of the game. The only real hope I can give you is that if the two really good players get to play [ Joe Cole & Rooney], the rest of the team somehow manage not to be dysfunctional and the opponents do not test the defense then England can win games. That's a lot of if's. Any team that raises their game -- ala Mexico --will beat them. That will happen sooner or later. But at this stage to have a team so badly arranged is not good management. This is not France over the top. This is a team that never got to the top. I really believe that there is the world of difference between a good National manager and a good team manager. The team manager can acquire players the only limitation is money, the national one is limited by resources. The team manager has time to shape the team to his will. The national one cannot. All in all this England team is no better individually than any other in the WC . As a team I just do not buy into the 'sum of the whole is greater than the parts' -- guys, it has not been so. As I said it's great to watch without the 'emotional bias'. I want to see what Germany do in their next game. If they stay as they were in their first they must be one of the 4 semi finalists. I reckon Argentina another. I'd like to see Mexico there too. Mexico have a great way of defending and an entertaining attack. They are still not at the level of a 'team as a machine' that gives the consistency to win these competitions. Now watch England win the Cup & meet eat humble pie. I hope so for you guys. Michael
