Media release;

Post Cyclone Rona, commercial logging commences in the Daintree
Rainforest.

A Mareeba-based logging company has set up operations in the Daintree
and is exploiting the fears of Cow Bay landowners traumatized by
Cyclone Rona, by offering free harvest of the protected vegetation in
return for timber salvage rights.

A loop-hole in the Douglas Shire Council's Vegetation Management
Bylaw is being exploited to allow the removal of healthy trees that
have withstood the ravages of Cyclone Rona.

Dr. Hugh Spencer of the Cape Tribulation Research Station said "We
are very concerned that this activity is permitted, as it flies in
the face of the international conservation and tourism importance of
the area."

CAFNEC coordinator Nikki Hungerford described the logging as "another
classic example of why the Qld. State Govenment must take urgent
action in implementing land clearing legislation".

Daintree Rainforest Task Force spokesperson Chris Bennett said "This
commercial logging activity directly threatens the estimated $500
million (p.a.) nature-based tourism industry of Tropical North
Queensland which uses the Daintree as its internationally recognised
icon",

"The local industry, which is grappling to recover from the
destructive effects of Cyclone Rona, can ill afford to endure further
damage from this unscrupulous activity", he said.
