NUCLEAR WASTE FROM MARALINGA BEING STORED IN ADELAIDE

LOCAL MP THREATENED WITH LEGAL ACTION FOR "BREACHING NATIONAL SECURITY"

According to Tom Koutsantonis, ALP member for the western Adelaide State
seat of Peake, nuclear waste from Maralinga is being stored under minimal
security within his electorate, in the Thebarton area.

He says he was told of this by a local who saw drums of material being
loaded into a tin shed in the '70s, under the Walsh Government. He has
asked a question in the House, and the existance of the Thebarton storage
"facility" was confirmed by the Liberal State Government.

The Liberal Government has threatened him with legal action for "breaching
national security" for publicising the existance of the facility within his
electorate.

He says the area now has a higher than average rate of leukaemia, although
it should be noted that some fairly noxious industries exist in the area,
including lead processing.

Apparently the "facility" is also used to store radioactive medical waste
from local hospitals.
