So far, the military and the militias have not murdered priests and nuns. It is important to recognise that the militias largely comprise Indonesians from West Timor, Flores and Java along with quisling or intimidated East Timorese. They have always been directed by Indonesian army and/or security personnel. These killings indicate that Wiranto has taken over the Jakarta leadership and that indiscriminate slaughter, slash and burn policy has been unleashed. Habibie is isolated and will be toppled. We may also see similar action taken against those courageous Indonesians in independent unions and the People's Democratic Party who are publicly calling for support for the East Timorese in Indonesia itself. Rallies held so far in Adelaide this week have attracted large numbers of people who are horrified at the slaughter occurring in East Timor, are feeling compassion for the Timorese. They want the UN, the Australian and other governments to take decisive action to stop the carnage. ACTIONS YOU CAN TAKE: * a total boycott of all Indonesian goods and services and especially Garuda * a total boycott of Australian companies that continue to do business with Indonesia * report any businesses that you know are still dealing with Indonesia to the Campaign and your friends * contact state senators and local politicians to demand: - a peace keeping force to be sent to East Timor immediately - stop all military cooperation and aid with Indonesia immediately - reverse Australia's recognition of Indonesia's sovereignty over East Timor - a formal apology to the people of East Timor for Australia's 25 years of betrayal - a formal, long overdue thank you for the help given by East Timor to Australia during World War 2 * attend the Vigil Against Genocide in East Timor on the steps of Parliament House organised by an ad hoc East Timor Action Coalition starting 10 September RALLIES AND OTHER EVENTS FRIDAY 10 SEPTEMBER 1999 7.30 am Rally, International Airport, Adelaide A Garuda Airlines flight is coming to Adelaide from Melbourne.
