*Indonesia cancels security pact with Australia

As tensions escalate between Australia and Indonesia over East
Timor Jakarta has cancelled a key defence agreement with Australia.

Indonesia announced today it was cancelling the agreement signed in
1995 which Australia heralded at the time as a major defence
initiative.

Security Minister Faisal Tanjung announced the move, saying it was
in response to Canberra's attitude and actions leading up the
United Nations' decision to dispatch peacekeepers to East Timor.

The 1995 agreement, signed by then Prime Minister Paul Keating,
allowed for information-sharing in relation to perceived mutual
threats.

Minister Tanjng said Canberra's actions are no longer perceived as
consistent with the spirit and letter of the agreement.

Australia recently announced it was reviewing its defence relations
with Indonesia.

Tensions between the two nations have escalated in recent weeks
over Jakarta's failure to contain the violence in East Timor.
