EAST TIMOR BOOK APPEAL

The University of Western Sydney and Allen & Unwin announce the publication
of the international Standard Tetum-English Dictionary produced by Geoffrey
Hull, Executive Director of the Academy of East Timor Studies within the
Faculty of Education and Languages. This is the first modern and
comprehensive record of the vocabulary of Tetum, the common language of
East Timor, and we hope that this publication will make a major
contribution to the institutionalisation of Tetum in a free East Timor.

Dr Hull's dictionary is one of several Timor-specific research and teaching
projects that have evolved over the past six years in our Faculty. These
projects include a range of courses on East Timorese languages and the
publication of academic journals and course materials for East Timor. This
work has been carried out in close collaboration with staff and students of
the University of East Timor and the Nossa Senhora de F=B7tima Seminary,
Balide, Dili. The Faculty is also seeking Portuguese government support to
develop a course in Portuguese language and culture, to underpin and expand
the work of the Academy of East Timor Studies.

In support of our work Xanana Gusmao made the following statement:

... we East Timorese must strive to protect and cultivate out unique ethnic
traditions and the many languages that form part of our patrimony.
Especially important is the cultivation of our national language, Tetum ...
I am deeply grateful to the scholars, both Timorese and non-Timorese, who
are working so hard to save our culture and language from extinction. The
efforts of Dr. Geoffrey Hull and his colleagues have already made a
significant contribution to the movement to develop our national language,
begun by the free East Timorese government in 1974 and 1975. (July 1998
from Cipinang Prison, Jakarta)

To mark the official launch of the Standard Tetum-English Dictionary, the
University of Western Sydney, with generous support from Gleebooks and
Allen & Unwin, is launching an East Timor Book Appeal. We are asking for
your support in making available copies of the Dictionary to the East
Timorese people. Every copy of the Dictionary purchased through this appeal
will be sent to the people of East Timor. (See details below) We also
invite you to contribute to the work of the Academy of East Timor Studies
in supporting the rebuilding of educational infrastructure and resources in
East Timor. Additional donations to the appeal will contribute to the work
of the Academy by providing scholarships for East Timorese students to
attend UWS, and to providing books and resources to the University of East
Timor and the Balide Seminary, which were looted and destroyed in the TNI
and militia-led violence that engulfed Dili after the recent referendum.

Your support for this appeal is greatly appreciated. If you have any
queries about the Dictionary or the Appeal please contact Jane Durie on 02
9772 6319 or email [EMAIL PROTECTED]
