The book Melbourne Uni wouldn't publish!

On 13 July 1998, the publication committee of Melbourne Uni Press endorsed
a collection of essays edited by Tony Coady for publication. On 27th July,
the Board of the Press, chaired by the chief Executive of the new Melbourne
University Private, rejected this recommendation.

'Why Universities Matter' was subsequently published elsewhere, and is now
available from the New International Bookshop. It contains contributions
from Judith Brett, Stuart MacIntyre, Raimond Gaita and others -- including
an epilogue from Morag Fraser discussing the issues raised by MUP's
decision to pull the book.

The New International Bookshop and the Association for the Public
University is hosting a discussion of matters arising from 'Why
Universities Matter', with a panel featuring Stuart MacIntyre, John Jenkin
and a representative of the NTEU. Sunday March 26th 2pm at the NIB. Call
9662 3744 for more info.

Latest issue of Z magazine has arrived at the Bookshop, featuring:

- multiple articles on the WTO, necessary reading for the anti-global
capitalism campaign.
- reflections on Seattle, Serbia and East Timor.
- articles on eco-activism, feminism and the religious right.
