FORTHCOMING EVENT...FORTHCOMING EVENT....FORTHCOMING EVENT....FORTHCOMING
EVENT.....

Leading Australian feminist, author and public activist, Wendy McCarthy will
be in Melbourne next week to present a public lecture entitled The Lost
Continent? Australians in search of leadership and vision.

On the eve of the release of her autobiography Don't Fence Me In, Wendy will
deliver what promises to be an insightful and candid look at what it means
to be Australian at the turn of the new century.

"In the 1960's being Australian and visible meant being male - mateship was
male. In the 21st Century relationships in politics and business will cross
gender - there is no other way. This means that male/female reconciliation
is an important 21st Century agenda theme"

In the wake of the republican referendum defeat and ongoing concerns over
reconciliation, Australia's role in Asia, problems of the bush and the ever
widening social and economic divide, Wendy will reflect on a growing public
restlessness towards the major political parties and their failure to
provide much needed leadership and vision.

"Reconciliation between black and white Australians will challenge the
shifting definition of what it means to be Australian - and it should."

In the '70s Wendy worked for the Family Planning Association, lobbied for
child care and abortion law reform, and assisted in the development of the
Women's Electoral Lobby. In the '80s she served as deputy chair of the ABC
Board and was General Manager of the Australian Bicentennial Authority. In
the '90s Wendy headed the National Trust and Australian Heritage Commission.

Wendy McCarthy will speak at the Victorian Arts Centre (ANZ Pavilion) on
Thursday 13 April at 6.30pm. Bookings can be made through the Victorian
Women's Trust (03) 9642 0422 [EMAIL PROTECTED] Tickets $20 Full Price $15
