SLAVERY - Just Stop it Thursday, June 29, 6pm State Library (corner of LaTrobe & Swanston) then march to Nike city store phone 9639 8622 Speakers: - Pamela Curr (Fairwear) - Rainer (National Student League for Democracy, Indonesia) - Karrina Nolan (S11 Alliance, Global Action Group) - Vivien Messimern (Resistance) After the recent "virtual attack" on Nike's web site (which incidently if any FBI/ASIO bods are tuned in, we had nothing to do with :) ), activists hope to press the point in the real world at an upcoming protest at Nike's main Melbourne office. Nike is renowned for its exploitation of outworkers. Predominantly women from a non-English speaking background, outworkers work from home with lack of other job opportunities, child-care services and social security. It is estimated that there are more than 300,000 home based outworkers in Australia. Combined with this is Nike's active policy of working with third world governments such as Indonesia, in preventing factory workers from organising to win basic conditions and wages. As part of the 29th Resistance national conference, activists are calling for Nike to: - sign the Homeworker Code of Practice - provide safe working conditions - a fair living wage to its workers - no forced labour or child labour - freedom to join a trade union For more information about the protest, or conference call 9639 8622 LL.VF -- Leftlink - Australia's Broad Left Mailing List mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.alexia.net.au/~www/mhutton/index.html Sponsored by Melbourne's New International Bookshop Subscribe: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]?Body=subscribe%20leftlink Unsubscribe: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]?Body=unsubscribe%20leftlink
