August Events

****Unity Dow, Botswanan Activist and Author of "Far
and Beyon'" Book launch and discussion on women's
activism in Africa
Thursday August 23rd, at 7:00 pm (drinks at 6:30)
Friends of the Earth Bookshop 9419 8700

Friends of the Earth Bookshop is excited to announce
the appearance of Unity Dow, Botswana's first female
high court judge and long time activist for women's
rights, in town for the Melbourne Writers' Festival.
Dow has challenged the country's legally sanctioned
discrimination against women, fought for AIDS
treatment, prevention, and education programs and
challenged the global economic systems which force
many of her country's people into poverty. Dow
spearheaded a legal campaign against Botswana's
discriminatory laws against women, winning equal
citizenship rights for women in 1992. Unity is both a
grassroots and judicial activist, targeting laws
governing domestic violence, child support and
property rights of married women.
