WOMWN IN BLACK VIGIL, ADELAIDE SOUTH AUSTRALIA

SILENT VIGIL AGAINST WAR AND MILITARISATION

on the steps of Parliament House
Wednesday 27th February 2002
5.30 pm to 6.30 pm

All women are invited to join our silent vigil in protest against
ongoing military violence.

War is never a solution to human conflicts and the so-called "war on
terror" is a contradiction in terms, a convenient excuse by repressive
governments to progress their own oppressive agendas. Real security is
possible but it cannot come from a cycle of escalating violence and
repression which merely begets more violence and opposition.

Wearing black clothing and adopting the silence enforced on the victims
of violence, we will express our opposition to all forms of violence.
We especially remember our sisters in Afghanistan. Please join us to
call on the Australian Government to pursue justice through the channels
of international law and to step back from lending further support to
any further military violence.

Apologies for any cross posting of this notice.
Please forward it widely though your networks.

A *SPECIAL PUBLIC MEETING* will be held :

on Monday, 4th MARCH at 7.30pm

at the COGLIN STREET COMMUNITY CENTRE

23 Coglin Street, Adelaide (off Gouger Street)

to be addressed by: DAVID WEBB -- prominent peace activist from the UK
        who will represent the
GLOBAL NETWORK AGAINST WEAPONS and NUCLEAR POWER in SPACE

on the topic of THE MILITARISATION OF SPACE --
WHAT CAN WE DO TO STOP the U.S. PUSH for STAR WARS ?
--and Australia's support of and involvement in such plans ?

*THIS IS A VERY IMPORTANT ISSUE AFFECTING ALL AUSTRALIANS*.

IT IS URGENT THAT ALL PEACE AND ANTI-NUCLEAR PEOPLE
        BECOME INVOLVED IN THIS CAMPAIGN
IF WE ARE TO COMBAT THE U.S. GOVERNMENT'S AMBITION
TO DOMINATE THE WORLD THROUGH STAR WARS

Discussion will include the planned Australia-wide action to take place
at Pine Gap from 5-7 October 2002. This will be Australia's part in the
world-wide actions to take place from 4-11 October 2002

*ALL WELCOME* --
*PLEASE MAKE SURE YOUR ORGANISATION IS REPRESENTED*.

David is a leader in the Yorkshire CND group and an engineering
professor in Leeds. He is a leader in the national CND campaign and has
been instrumental in bringing the weapons-in-space issue into prominence
throughout the UK.

In 2001 David and the Yorkshire CND hosted the Global Network Against
Weapons and Nuclear Power in Space's international membership conference
in Leeds where people came from 20 countries, including a delegate from
APC(SA). He is also the treasurer of the Global Network and one of its
most active and trusted board of directors members. He has previously
represented the Global Network at international conferences throughout
Europe.

David will speak on the actions being taken, and organised, around the
world against the United States' "Star Wars" plans, for which our
government has shown support.

He will talk about the world conference being held in the U.S. in May,
and the call for International Days of Protest to Stop the
Militarisation of Space, planned for 4th - 11th October 2002.

In Australia a demonstration is being planned at Pine Gap from 5th - 7th
October, but local actions are also needed.

"STAR WARS RETURNS" - this video will be shown prior to David's talk.

This powerful documentary reveals how the United States is moving to
make space a new arena of war. It presents military documents
declaring the U.S. intention to "control space" and from space
"dominate" the world below.

It exposes U.S. development programs now underway to produce space-based
laser weapons. And, it shows how the George W. Bush administration and,
especially, its Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, is pushing ahead
rapidly with Star Wars -- that far more than "missile defense" is
involved.

It tells how, at the U.N., because of the U.S. program for space
warfare, a vote was recently held to reaffirm the Outer Space Treaty --
the basic international law which sets aside space for "peaceful
purposes." Some 163 nations voted yes. The U.S. abstained.

"Star Wars Returns" explores the international opposition to Star Wars.
It spotlights the strong challenge to Star Wars being made at the
grassoots level worldwide by the Global Network Against Weapons and
Nuclear Power In Space.
