Rally For Our Forests - tell the State Labor Government and the ALP what you think:
Save Goolengook (Melbourne Desk) urges as many people as possible to attend the Rally For Our Forests on Saturday 18 May 2002. The Rally has been organised by key environmental groups. The Rally is being held in Batman Park opposite the Convention Centre where the ALP will be simultaneously holding its annual State Conference. This means we have a unique opportunity to urge Labor MPs and general members of the ALP to join the call for the State Government to guarantee full protection of our old growth forests and rainforests. Around 450 ALP Delegates and affiliated Union Delegates will be attending the State Conference in addition to ordinary members of the ALP. We have been told that two motions will be put up for debate by pro-forest ALP members at their State Conference. The 1st motion calls on the State Government to conduct an inquiry into integrating Goolengook Upper catchment into the Errinundra National Park under the National Parks Act 1975. The 2nd motion calls on the State Government to end clearfell logging of the Otway State Forest and cease all logging of water catchments in the Otways. Save Goolengook (Melbourne Desk) has come into possession of copies of the forest motions and attaches them for your information. Importantly, a positive shift in forest policy of the ALP could lead to greater pressure being brought to bear on the Labor Government from within its own rank and file. We would ask you to contact, prior to Saturday 18 May, ALP members who you know are sympathetic to saving our forests and urge them to attend at their State Conference and make a stand and also join the Rally outside the conference!
