                176 Tynte St, North Adelaide.

BACKGROUND: Who are the Mickelbergs?

In 1983, the three Mickelberg brothers were convicted of swindling
$650,000 from the Perth Mint, on the basis of fabricated evidence
(including a forged fingerprint) and unsigned "confessions".

Avon Lovell is an investigative journalist who has spent much of the
past 17 years working to expose what really happened to the Mickelberg
brothers in his book "Mickelberg Stitch".

In that time his books on the case have been effectively banned, and he
has had to represent himself in court over 1200 times. In June this
year, Lovell obtained an affidavit from Tony Lewandowski, a former
police officer involved with the case, confirming that evidence had been
fabricated.

Since then, the West Australian government has succeeded in delaying the
appeal process, Avon Lovell has been fined $30,000 for contempt of
court, and Tony Lewandowski is in jail charged with perjury, despite
having been given a written guarantee of immunity.

What's this got to do with us in SA?

The Mickelberg case is only one of a number in WA in which it appears
that police investigation processes were less than adequate and
incompetent at best, and corrupt at worst. The implications are
enormous, and involve not just the police, but government and the whole
judicial system.

Could it happen in SA? Yes
Has it happened in SA? Yes
Should it concern you? Yes
