Nike demonstrators cleared of charges On Monday 14 October at the Melbourne's Magistrate Court the case against the five defendants who were arrested outside Nike was found to be insufficient and it was dismissed.
The five demonstrators had been arrested and charged with "besetting" the Nike premises and "obstructing police" on 1 June 2001. The arrests had been made in the tenth week of weekly Friday night demonstrations for workers rights held outside the Melbourne Nike store. During the case it was stated in evidence that the police had mobilised 210 police officers on the night, in order to end the demonstration. The court case lasted four days and up to a dozen police gave evidence for the prosecution. The five defendants wish to thank their legal team for their excellent work. The defendants also wish to thank all the people who attended the court case to provide moral support, and all the people who sent solidarity messages.
