It was a 1/4 in bit .I used the bushings to set a stop. I used extremely light 
passes to sneak up on the stop . I have been thinking I should have used epoxy 
instead of CA glue . The palm is very fibrous and stringy , more like a grass. 
That half you see is the only one of four pieces that made it. On the plus side 
it sands and polished very easy. I'll try to load a better picture from home , 
I'm having a hard time doing it from this phone.

Very nicely done. Did you use a template for your shape and the tapers. Did
you take light cuts from the side and what size bit did you use; 1/4", 1/8"?

Yes it is black palm with the other half redwood burl on the other half. The
palm kept blowing out on the lathe , finally got that half done with a
downward spiral compression bit on the mill. The burl was a leftover from an
another messup.

Is that Black Palm on the body of the pen?  It's hard to tell in the photo.
