Here's the compression chuck idea that is very flexible.  This drawing is a 
representation that could be scaled to work on any size. 


It's a variation of the cup chuck where a piece is hammered into a cup.  In 
this case, the boss at the bottom of the chuck would match the center hole of 
my rotary table.  I would use a 1/4-20 screw in the center to hold the cup.  A 
hose clamp would be used on the outside to pinch the piece holding the work in 
place.  This is similar to a spring chuck from the old days, but simplified.  
This could be made out of scrap wood so there is little expense and no worries 
of crashing your bits.   

Let me know what you think, but I would really like to see someone take this 
ball and make a project with it and let me know how well it works out.
