There are several reasons for lots of burning. First was the bit dull? Second if the router bit is spinning too fast for your rate of travel you will get burn marks. Slow the router down or speed up your cranking. Good question on the up cut, I'd be tempted to try a down cut since it would push the shaving into the center and not tear out the edges of the beads. I don't do the hollow spirals so I'm really not the guy to ask.
