If you need extra rail as you we were talking about you have plenty right on
your mill replace all the bottom rails with some sort of available extrusion
or even square tubing combined with that strong base you have made and you
have plenty of spare rail. Thats what i did to get spare rail. You might
even try to weld the 2 together without worry if it fails, because you still
have the top ones and you could even cut the weld off if it didn't work for
jigs and fixtures as you indicated before. Just a thought

Also another thought perhaps you might like to cut a middle piece out of the
top of part your base some were if you need to do long vertical work on your
mill

Subject: joining two machines...progress report

well, so far so good...the base is done, as you can see...dimensions are
182' long,19 1/2" deep and 17 1/4" high(no wheels...27" with wheels)...it is
incredibly strong, in both the vertical and horizontal planes...probably
could have used 1/2" ply instead of 3/4", and gotten sufficient
results...because i used 3/4', each half, and the center joiner piece weighs
quite a bit...i've roughly estimated it as 500 lbs....a bit of overkill to
say the least, but it is very strong and stable...and the big bonus is that
it breaks down into three pieces, none longer than 8ft., for ease of
transport...still to come are four drawers to be bottom mounted...approx 36"
wide by 18" deep by 8" high...two between the wheels and one on the outside
of each wheel...these will also be designed to be completely removable to
not increase the size of the "boxes", again for ease of transport...also not
done yet are the steel rods that run the length of the base in the bottom
corners...when these are in place and tightened, there will be no dip in the
center at the bottom, between the two boxes...a bit difficult to photograph,
it is longer than it appears in the photos
