However 3/4 HP is about perfect for an old 12" gap bed lathe such as the Delta one I have in my shop. It currently has a 3/4 HP Baldor motor on it and I have been considering changing it out to a treadmill motor and controller.

I know that they frequently advertize them at higher powers, but simple calculations of amperage draw at 120 volts proves otherwise. I currently use a 52" wide belt sander in my shop and it is somewhat underpowered with a 10 hp motor. I have to be careful with feed rates while watching amperage on the main motor to keep it less than 60 amps. I can't imagine that these homemade sanders could really do much sanding on large surface area projects. The biggest drawback is that the entire surface is exposed to the sanding belt at once. That creates enormous power requirements. My 10 HP sander only sands a narrow portion of the work piece as it is moved under the sanding head. Just my two cents worth.
