My wife and l got tried of looking at Pine ewel posts clunky spindles so l
designed something different using my legacy 900 for the newel posts. I
changed everything to solid Oak. I made a hollow barley twist with the
stock at 2 3/4 " in diameter , using a 2' barley twist, 2 starts and using
standard gear with the E gear . Now you have to remember l'm an amateur and
l'm experimenting all the time with my Legacy , now l know that with a 2"
barley twist l should be using 2" diameter stock for everything to be even.
However l didn't want to spend more money on router bits l spend enough on
tools now as it is ! Moving forward l decided to try this so l pick up 4
oak newel posts that were seconds ,l got lucky there were 4 alike and they
were $26.00 each, than l used my bottom cleaning bit to get my diameter
and remove some of the old design. After that l did my hollow barley twist
using information that l've learned on the group . [ by the way l'd like to
take this opportunity to thank all the people in the group that enter
helpful tips and project documentation.] You have to remember that when
you make something like this that you are creating a spring so for a newel
post like this you MUST have strong spindles that help make your railing
strong and solid . If l was doing it another way l would have incorporated
a steel rod down the middle of the newel post . But the way l did my
spindles and along with my railings helped to keep everything stiff enough.
Because of my diameter l ended up with one spiral being 1" and the other
close to 2". Sanding these spirals was a task , the best and easiest way to
do it is to buy a belt sanding strip ,cut it to your desired length and put
it around the spiral and sand them like you were drying your back with a
towel ager a shower ! l'll post pictures and leave it up to you to figure
out the before and after results . lf you'd like to see photos that might
be better, just go to lumberjacks.com. l'm in there as

I hope this worked, remember l'm an amateur ,but if l can do it so
can you. Thanks
