Here is something I did years a go modifying a model 900 for template following
the same idea but cutting from the top would lower the work under the rails to
let the mill cut larger diameters than the mill is designed to do.

Hi Bill,

I definitely found a previous post with pictures with someone lowering the
mecanism so it could give room for 18 in. turnings.

There was minimal adaptations to reach this result.

The problem is that I lost the link...

I will have to look for my google historic files.

One of our members widened his mill search the archives of this group and you

So it is possible. and the column in the picture is defiantly possible that is
the sort of thing the mills are made for and a very great deal more

Oh yes and Emmanuel welcome to the group

Good evening Emmanuel.

With the Legacy 1800, 10" is the max. dia. of the turning stock. On the Wood
Chuck (an earlier version of the LOM.) larger dia.'s are possible, due to a
different design/frame work of the mill, but with a 1800 you are limited to
work with in the rails. Now there may be a way to modify that??? (but I don't
know how to do that. at this time.)(but having said that, when there is a will,
there is ALWAYS a way.) ;-)

Now Legacy did make a monster mill, (2500) that could turn the post you are
thinking about, (And they do pop up on E-bay every so often.) But again
different design/frame work from the 1800 that you are looking at .

I just looked at your photo. what pitch is that post? that's a good looking
turning!

Its late. and I have to be up early tomorrow.

Welcome to the group. I am looking forward to talking to you more latter.

Have a good night.

C.A.G.

If your using the standard gears with the 2x multiply gears the maximum pitch
is 15 inches

But if you have the 4x multiplier gear set which replaces all the standard
gears the maximum pitch is 120 inch pitch

Hi every one,

This is my firt post in your group. I have my cabinet maker/wood turner shop in
Bedford (Quebec) just 10 minutes away from Vermont.

I am very impressed by the quality and creativity of your group. I am very
happy I could find it !

I plan to acquire a LOM 1800 considering that it is probably the only dedicated
non CNC tool for spiral work on turnings.

This mean that for around $2500 you get a tool that a 10,000$ CNC lathe is not
even able to do: making spiral job on 96' colomns.

In some posts I saw that some of you succeded in transforming their mill to
accept up to 18'' diameter turnings which makes it even more appealing!

My question is what is the maximum pitch you could get for spiral drive on your
mill for large diameters (colomns)?

Is this kind of long spirals possible with a LOM 1800? See the picture

Thank you.

Emmanuel
