Yes which way up you have the rails is important or your mill might not work smoothly

One little "tip". Look closely at the aluminum extrusions. At first glance they seem symmetrical. Look closer, and you'll find they are not. One of the four long channels has an imbedded "line"/groove running down its length. The instructions will tell you which way to face that side of the extrusion - depending upon which piece of it you are installing. I don't know why it it there, or if it is all that "important" - but the directions point it out. Let's show our wives - that in spite of the "ol wives tale" that "Men don't read instructions" - we sometimes do. Again - enjoy your Mill! I made if for about $200 (don't tell her that!)., including the slide door hardware It was strong enough to house a 32 inch Sony TV, which I think weighed 450 lbs. :). We still have it today. From there I built our living room side tables and coffee table from cherry, raised panel waynes cotting (MDF) for the dining room, a window seat (birch ply and maple face), and a library/cabinet/TV entertaiment center for my basement out of poor man's cherry (poplar). In 2003, I built my oldest daughter's "big girl bed" and drawer set out of maple. I bought the Legacy 800 soon after hoping to make more creative pieces. But, as life has it, my wife and I decided to make more babies instead, so I never opend the boxes for the Legacy 800. Every year, life kept the boxes closed...unitil yesterday. My wife wants a new kitchen island. I want to make hope chests for my three teenage girls, and I want my ten year old son to learn how to build things. After opening up the parts box of the 800, I noticed this would be quite a project to set up. I searched for assembly directions, and couldn't find them (or they disintegrated after 15 years). I found this group and hoped I could get (1)Assembly instructions for the 800 or similar mill (2) experienced help with an older legacy model (3)share my work with like minded people.
