But then again chips and dust can be a treasure to some; a few years back I was
doing woodturning demos at a county fair when a youngster accompanied by his
mom after intently watching for several minutes wanted to know what I was going
to do with all of those shavings saying that he’d relish them as hamster
bedding.

Bill - I LOVED IT!!!

Brigitte, What does "Fly tip" mean? To dump/dispose of it on the highway -
excuse me - "motorway"?

Just acquire your box from a neighbor or one of the places where they encourage
folks to drop off their old Amazon, eBay, etc. boxes to be re-used. In our
area there are several stores that do that. You drop yours off (at no cost)
and I can get it for my use - also at no cost. The idea being - it keeps it
out of the landfill, keeps you from having to haul it there or put it out as
trash or recycle, and keeps me from having to go to a store and buy a box.

Then if you want - just leave the old addressee info intact - it won't reflect
you as the owner. (I also liked Russ' idea to put the address of a local gov't
official you you don't like - or the address of the "neighborhood troll".)

Also - like Ryan stated - I seriously doubt that a "Porch Pirate" (PP) would
spend the time to read the label (Assuming they CAN read!).

Most likely the "bait on the hook" would be the large Amazon "smile/arrow" or
the large & colorful eBay logo. It'll get the attention of the PP's.

You may want to put some of your scrap blocks of wood or a rotting firewood
pile log in there too - to add some weight. The heavier it is, the more apt
the PP will think they've snagged a big'un! Heh-heh!

You would not be liable for littering, a stolen package is just that. No
enforcement agency would hold you to blame. But you could always black out the
name and address on the label first. No thief will check the label I am sure.
