I have some lignum vitae. How big of a piece do you all need? I will cut to
fit. I paid $25 BF it's just under 2" by 10" by 60" I also have some 1x1x20
cocobolo about 20 of them for $8.00 each. It's also a hard oily wood

Good morning everyone.

WOW that posting is way to pricey. I would stay away from it, I know you can
buy the same wood for much cheaper, else-ware.

Mac. melting plastics is something that Has always interested me although I
have not done it yet.

I too (like I think it was Doug) have made my own 5/8-4 tap out of an old piece
of screw. And Yes it works well. I bought one of those E-bay taps, it still
has not arrived yet. I am looking forward to seeing the quality difference
between my home made one and this factory made tap.

I project that I have tried a few times over the years is to Hobb a worm gear
with the 5/8-4 thread, My goal was to mate it up with the Legacy's lead screw.

All that I can say on that project is, I did have some success, but nothing
that worked as well as I had hoped for. Perhaps when this new tap gets to me,
I can try it again, and have better success? We will see. ;-)

More on this topic latter.

Have a Great weekend everyone. Lots to do, in the shop today...

Tim,

I honestly think you will really enjoy making an Acme nut (or whatever else)
out of the Lignum Vitae. I will tell you- it is TOUGH STUFF - which is what
makes it an ideal wood for you to use. Look it up on the internet.

Tim & others,

Let's hear it for "Do it yourselfers!"

Has anyone ever made lead screw blocks out of wood?

If so - what were the results?

I know they made <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lignum_vitae> "bearings" for
ships out of Lignum Vitae - so I'll assume one of The Group members has used
wood for a screw block.

I'm sure the type & quality of the species you choose will have a "bearing" ()
on how it performs.

Just a thought.

Tim - let us know how your "soon to be fabricated" Lignum Vitae screw blocks
turn out.

Get Happy!

Mac

Well considering it will be only cutting Delrin I should think it would be ok I
use Chinese high speed steel in my metal lathe and in my shaper and it cuts
brass, aluminium and mild steel as well as any other HSS tool. I also have a
set of Chinese tap and dies that work fine. remember the alternative for a 5/8
x 4 acme tap Is custom made at around $300 to me it is worth trying. that’s why
I bought one I will tap a piece of Delrin when I get the chance and see but I’m
sure it will work ok.

Just my opinion of course

Any of you guys looking for a acme tap to make your own leadscrew nuts? Well I
found this a few weeks back and bought one it arrived today

Seems to fit the Delrin nut perfectly. This could be extremely handy if you
can’t buy any replacement leadscrew nuts.

the listing is for 2 but I have seen it sell out and restock twice since I
bought mine so every one should be ok to get one. I wanted the make sure it was
the right thread before I let you all know about it.
