It may be that you need to get MANY more Aussies to order bulky/heavy things from America - which will increase the need/demand for service to get them Down Under. And you will also need to drive up the demand in America for Australian-produced items. That way, the ships are carrying loads in both directions. (I suspect that may be a big reason why you pay so much now. It is expensive (and dangerous) to run a ship across the Pacific half full or less. Therefore, the trip TO Australia has to bear most of the cost of the round trip - since they won't make as much on the return trip - being only half full.) Years ago it was great, America had surface mail by ship it was way cheaper it just took 3 months to get here. but it was worth it to save high shipping costs but In 2007, the US Postal Service discontinued its outbound international surface mail witch was a total pain. For example when I bought a legacy mill for like $2000 it took a further $3000 or $4000 in shipping and import taxes to get it too me and that was back when our dollar was close to your dollar in value it would be even more now days but back in the surface mail days it would have been like $500 or $600 shipping. If only some the other company did surface mail. Yeah Bill that is a dilemma when you cant get the material you want. I'm sure as you've mentioned too that shipping is usually the downer on the whole plan, and trying to make your own is just not in the cards. Plywood when roped gives a pretty neat optical elusion. I also found that if you buy cheaper plywood's with varying thickness of layers, and glued them together, the look is more like old growth lumber on larger turnings. Now after seeing this. Perhaps a fancier, Plywood turning could be in the near future of my Legacy plywood spindles. I'm not talking about making Veneers like he did, but more simple patterns made out of plywood, then turned round. and example a diamond pattern glued up into 3" spindle, and then perhaps roped or given a shape.
