To answer Jeff's question, "is there much difference in the noise?" the 
answer is YES.  My straight blade planer was a good one with excellent 
finish, but it howled very loudly at over 120 db.  The new spiral segmented 
grizzly is less than 60 db cutting cantankerous hardwood. That means that 
the planer is not as loud as conversational talking which averages 60 db 
and up. And the quality of cut in difficult pieces is unbeatable.
