Hi Bill

I spoke with Legacy this morning and they made their own lead screws and they
were indeed square profile threads. This would make sense as the trapezoid
profile would push the screw out of engagement with a load. If I had access to
a lathe I would make a thread chaser tool to rework the profile of my half nuts
made with the standard acme tap

Anybody got a piece of lead screw floating around?

Got me. Not sure where the machine came from, as it is far older than anyone

screws and I am pretty sure they have a square profile. I will double check it
when I go back in Wednesday. I am going to reach out to Legacy to see if they
can shed any light on it. I am also going to put a notice on this board to
see if someone had a piece of lead screw on hand.

One of the members might have one they could sell to you to make it right or
there are places that sell it I believe

I took a closer look this morning while at the Woodshop and my half nuts were
made with a tap that has trapezoid thread form, like a standard acme. The lead
screw has square thread form, like a buttress thread. I am going to consult my
Machinery Handbook to find what is needed. But the difference between the two
profiles is preventing the half nuts I had made from fully engaging. Diameters
and lead are correct. When I obtain the proper tap, I should be able to
rethread my current blocks and be good to go. BTW there is no reason these
half nuts couldn’t be made from hard maple.

this is the tap I would buy it looks like the one I bought but it is a
trapezoidal tap so it will be 30 degrees and not 29 but because your tapping

Delrin not metal there is a bit of leeway finding the exact correct one is
almost impossible I looked for 10 years and of course you don’t know till you
try it that it will work with a possible bad batch out there, I had to do that
I took a chance and it worked, one last thing the recommended tapping drill

Is a little small for Delrin and one degree out so 7/16 is what I used and it
allows for the strange cutting properties of the Delrin. But all this is just
what I would do you all must make up your own minds here is some Delrin I
tapped https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FOUW3xblB_4

So here is what I think, 4 threads per inch is 0.25000 of an inch pitch in
metric that’s 6.350 mm so they might have made the tap at 6mm pitch which is
4.23 threads per inch and that will never fit our acme lead screws. That’s my 2
cents worth lol

Hey Bill

Its been a while, I have two Acme screw taps (5/8-4 and One 5/8-8 tap) My first
tap was a home made tap.

I used a short piece of an Legacy Acme screw to make the tap. the other I
bought on the web. some years back. (I wasn't aware there were a different
thread angle. I guess I just got lucky?)

I was wondering if these home made split nuts made by Tim P. could be
re-molded. or if it would be a waist of time?

HEY. Tim P. If you like, Send me the plastic, and I can try to cut them for
you.

I know that taps that I own fit my Legacy. If you can send me the part, I will
tap it and send it back to you.

Send me a private E-mail at curt....@yahoo.com <mailto:curt....@yahoo.com>
and I will GIVE you the mailing info.

Dose the split nut fit the shaft if you lay it on the acme screw? Perhaps it

Hi Folks

I had two pair of split nuts made using a standard 5/8”-4 acme tap and for some
reason it doesn’t quite fit the lead screw. I have checked it near the end of
the shaft where there is no chance of wear. It’s like the lead is off a few
thousands of an inch or the thread width of the tap is just a little too big.
Driving me bonkers. Anyone had issues with making new half nuts?

Thanks.
