I have experimented, off and on, over the last two
days with the sourcing
for census data (probably a model for other sourcing
in my database.
I have come up with a method that approximates the
Elizabeth Shown Mills
standard, I think. It doesn't use a lot of the info
boxes available in the
Master Source or the Source Detail screens - but
depends mostly on typing it
exactly as I want it to print - into the Source
Detail Text screen.
I would like to hear from some of the more
experienced users about whether
or not they see pitfalls in this method.
In the Event Screen I put:
Event name: 1850 Census [I have events for each
census year]
Description: Joel F. DeBoard, 14, b IL [person
for whom event is
entered, although not head of household]
Date: 24 Oct 1850 [date of enumeration]
Place: District 13, White County, Illinois
[place of enumeration]
Notes: All data on the whole census family.
Master Source/Info
(Shown in Master Source List) 1850 U.S. Census
(Book, deed, etc) Census/Tax
I leave everything else on this page blank,
including author, title,
publication facts.
No repository, no comments, nothing.
Source Detail
Info screen empty, except for the surety level
Text tab, I entered the remaining source
information as I wanted it to
print:
Elizabeth DeBoard household; White County, Illinois,
population schedule,
District 13, p. 133 (penned), p. 333 (printed),
dwelling 960, household 960,
digital image by subscription, *Ancestry.com*
(http://www.ancestry.com :
accessed 29 June 2006) from National Archives
microfilm 432, roll 132.
In the source detail on the Information screen,
uncheck "Add this detail to
the Source Citation on reports"
In the source detail on the Text screen, check "Add
this text to the Source
Citation on reports"
The resulting source looks like this:
.
5. 1850 U.S. Census. Elizabeth DeBoard household;
White County, Illinois,
population schedule, District 13, p. 133
(penned), p. 333 (printed),
dwelling 960, household 960, digital image by
subscription, Ancestry.com
(http://www.ancestry.com : accessed 29 June 2006)
from National Archives
microfilm 432, roll 132.
I would appreciate anyone pointing out to me the
possible fallacies of this
plan.
