Yes there is.
In Thunderbird 1.5+, the first Icon in the header window looks like a
balloon. Click on it and messages will
be organized by "thread". Under the menu heading View>Threads, there is
an option to collapse all threads.
Then by clicking of + in front of a topic, you can see all "sub-threads".
