That sounds as though you are in Family View, so I suppose you mean you then click on Name List and get a screen with the list of people in your Family File on the left of the screen. If you have a large-ish plain white area on the right of the screen, then you are probably on the Notes or Event tab for that screen and have not yet entered Notes or Tabs for the highlighted person.
If I am right so far, try clicking on the other tabs above the white are - Detail, Edit, Events etc and you will see what is available. A blank white area is not for the placement of photos, but is where certain information will show up if and when you have entered it.
