John, Go to Options>Customise. Select the Data Format tab, and look for Living Indicator (on the right hand side of the screen). Tick the box, and then click the "Select Colour" box. This allows you to select the colour of the number to the left of those children who are living on the Family tab. Those whose colour is not changed are not living. Ta Da!
