Beth, I do not regularlu use the fromatting options, however, since seeing your 
email I have been having a look at this.

As far as I can see what is happening is that the Spell Checker is trying to 
change a lower case letter to an upper case. If you go to Options in the Spell 
Checker and uncheck "Case Sensitive" (which is set by default) then the 
formatting codes do not show.

The side effect of this is, of course, that, to quote the Help Files, "canada" 
will not be deifferentiated from "Canada"
