Dick:

If you're looking for standards and conventions for data entry, "Getting It
Right" by Mary H. Slawson is a good starting point and most of her examples
are based on Legacy software. I bought my copy through Millennia. Although
the book is apparently geared toward LDS members doing work for temple
submission, it provides thorough guideines for entering each element of the
basic individual information, including events. Once you digest those
instructions, however, you'll surely want to experiment and see how they
work with the GEDCOMs, books, or reports that *you* want to use and make
adjustments accordingly. If you're just beginning, it's a good idea to make
a note of the conventions you decide to use because it's so easy to forget
and slip into inconsistency. Between Mills and Slawson you'll have an
excellent set of basic rules. And like you (I suspect), I always like to
know what the "rules" are before I decide to break them.

Thanks for all the thoughts. I will have to get over the idea that
there is a "right" way to record my data. When I read Elizabeth
Mills' book, the training CDs, and other tutorial material, I got the
impression that there were more standards and conventions than there
actually are.

I think I'll be wrestling with this one for awhile............

Thanks again and happy holidays......
