You can't really select more than one status though you can highlight more than one in the selection window.
The database only has a place for 1 child status.

Although you could highlight two, when you return to check what has been selected, only one is really selected.

I don't see the problem with creating more child status categories with the desired combinations.

If you could assign two or more, the cry would go up to display two or more.

Well you can do that now if you create your own combinations - why complicate matters?
