The accepted genealogical practice is "Nickname" or called name in quotes
and (Maiden) names in parenthesis. Such as my name: Margaret La Nell "La
Nell" (Johnson) Shores. I am not Also Know As, I am Known As La Nell. Only
the IRS, Vital Records, Social Security and the Department of Motor vehicles
know me as Margaret. No matter whether you like it or not! If you keep to
a genealogical standard, fewer people will ultimately be confused.

a quick lesson on the formatting of names.

My 2 cents worth. I like it the way Legacy is now as it follows sound
genealogical practices.

 Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] Quoted Names

I really didn't like how quoted names looked when someone went by their
middle name: William Ralph "Ralph" Smith (the repeating of the name just
doesn't look right to me), however, I did like to be able to have the "known
as" name in the family view and also, the "known as" name printing in
reports.

I liked how brackets looked around the "known as" name, but then reports
wouldn't print with this name.

So I now use both brackets and quotes, which most people will probably think
is overkill, but I like how it looks and the known as name still prints in
reports.

William Ralph ("Ralph") Smith, or if he goes by an entirely different
nickname: William Ralph ("Bud") Smith.

My 2 cents to this interesting discussion.

Laurel
