Just to wrap this up---I was successful in resubscribing but to do so
I had to start from scratch.  In other words the subscribe link
contained within messages from the mailing list led only to an
authorization page which made little sense since if you weren't
subscribed how would you have a User Name and Password?

Try to log on with your old email and password.  If that doesn't work or
if you can't remember the old password just re-register with a new
identity (email & password).
