When you show the line back to the starting person, "Show person numbers" would show the people using the number that each person is in the report. For example, if John was the father of the person and David was the grandfather, it might show John3, David1, meaning that David was #1 on the report and John was #3 on the report. If you used "show generation numbers" instead, the same example as above would look like this: John2, David1, meaning that John was in the second generation and David was the first generation. If you do two sample reports, using at least 3 generations, with one report showing person numbers and one report showing generation numbers, you'll see the difference. It's hard to explain.
