Awesome ideas--I have a pure research file, but had kept dirty files separate. Merging them is a great idea, especially with Legacy's tools to note the source. I, too have learned my lesson the hard way about importing data and have received not so kind e-mails from folks about such information. So now I only share my research file.
Not only do I get a daily dose of great ideas from this list---but some fun laughs as well! Thanks. Ann On 6/5/07, Joe <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:
This is where the surety levels can come in handy for those that use them. Basically what I do is create a "master" file in which I import others work that gives me a reference point to start with. It is a dirty file full of "junk" and I don't care what's in it in regards to sources or duplicate individuals. I don't use the sources from that file unless I know it is from a trusted researcher. I have over 20,000 names in this file. I have another file that is my "research only" file that currently has 2,300 names--7 years and a few thousand dollars in the making (some people spend money on beer I spend it on researching and travel). This research file contains all those individuals and family units that I have researched using valid sources, such as, obituaries, census data, death certificates, cemetery photos, etc. When I'm ready to move on and research another family unit in my research file, I will open both files side by side using the split screen view (a wide screen monitor is great for this). I can then easily move the master file person/family unit over to my research file which saves me a lot of hand typing. I fill in the blanks in my research file with new sources afterwards as well as run through a duplicate individual check to help keep my research file "pure". This is one of the reasons I love this program so much because of the intuitive nature of it and it also allows me to work systematically.
