Frankie, The thing to know about handhelds are that there are different operating systems available. The Palm Operating system is used on Palm Devices and the Windows Mobile Operating system are used on HP's and a large number of other devices. Software written for one type of Operating System won't work on devices running on a different operating system.
Also with the devices, you can get them with built-in Phones if you wish to have a single device instead of a cell phone and a PDA. If you do go that route, you generally have to go to your phone company (T-Mobile, AT&T, Alltel, etc.) to find out which devices they have available. Pocket Genealogist uses the Windows Mobile operating system whereas GEDStar uses the Palm operating system. Here's a link to the features in Pocket Genealogist, you should be able to find something similar on the GEDStar site. http://www.northernhillssoftware.com/EN/Information/features.htm and the home page: (There is a 200 page user guide if you wish to download that to see the features, lots of screen prints in it) http://www.northernhillssoftware.com One of the big differences between GEDStar and Pocket Genealogist is that you can change data on the device and sync it directly back into your Legacy Database (with the "Advanced" version of Pocket Genealogist) Pocket Genealogist is also still actively under development... since Palms have lost so much market share over the last couple of years (I don't think Microsoft even considers them competition anymore) you'll find that the development houses doing Palm software are a lot less active with their software. (If they haven't completely stopped development already) BTW, some Palms come with the Windows Mobile operating system (I actually just bought a Palm Treo running Windows Mobile) so not ALL Palms are unusable by Pocket Genealogist. I bought a Zire a couple of years ago and its great! You can get an add on keyboard for when you need to transcribe documents. Because it is so small, almost every repository allows you to bring it in, including the keyboard. I started out using PAF for Palm. It was OK, it is free! However, I recently purchased GedStar and I like it. It is way more functional than PAF. The fact that my Zire takes pictures and is an MP3 player as well is a plus.
