Irfanview has three options, batch conversion, batch rename, and batch conversion and rename the result files.
When doing a straight batch conversion with Irfanview, the original file name is retained and the extension is changed, INCLUDING a true change to the file format. We have to be careful in that the term "file name" can refer to just the first part, or the name plus the extension. When converting with Irfanview and other programs , the file name (first part) usually does not change, but the file name (total) does. So while technically you end up with a different full file name, it is not a "rename" process in the sense that term is intended. The batch rename is intended to change the first part - such as Family001 - to Family_Thanksgiving_2005_001, ignoring the extension. The convert and rename accomplishes the two tasks simultaneously. As was posted by Richard, you can use Access (and there are other renaming utilities) which will allow a batch change of just the extension part of a file. That is NOT however a true change in the file format, even when you are able to open the result. Some files will become totally unusable if the extension is changed, so it is not a technique I would recommend. Ronald's suggestion to save copies on disk is excellent, and I would add, more than one disk in more than one location (send copies to your relatives, safe deposit box, etc). Backups stored at home do no good if your house burns down, taking the computer and the disks together. I do not know of a way of batch converting only the file extension, only the whole file name which has to follow a pattern eg family001.jpg, family002.jpg etc. Irfan View>Help>Find>batc convert gives details of how to resize and rename at the same time. In Legacy I am afraid that you will have to individually link to the .jpgs as the file names have changed. For your information should you ever move all the files to a different location once you have told Legacy where to find one it will find the others in the folder. Following the good advice of retaining the quality images does mean that you have twice the number of images but one surely has a back up anyhow. I would suggest that you put it on disc unless you have a very large amount of disc space. Hope this helps. Ron Ferguson Have you unlocked the real power of Legacy?
