Good morning all.

I have been here since 3.45am trying to compare two files and transfer
some information in the notes from file BATES to file CULLODEN.

The BATES file does not have any sources just copious notes. I am trying
to copy what is in BATES notes and not in CULLODEN notes from notes to
notes and then later sort out the source information as I still have not
grasped the source entry as yet.

I am going to have something to eat hoping for a reply.

Many thanks in advance

Regards from Valerie in sunny Sydney.

Thank you very much Jim. I've been looking for this for a while. Now I
can stop worrying about this one. Thanks again,

Jim

Jim,

I use one master source for each US Census and put all of the
particulars in
the Source Details. For example:

SOURCE LIST NAME: 1870 US Census
AUTHOR: United States. Census Office
TITLE: Ninth Federal Census: 1870 Population Schedule
PUBLICATION FACTS: Washington, D.C.: The National Archives, 1962, 1968

SOURCE DETAIL: Louis C Clerk household, Weston Post Office, Platte
County,
Missouri, sheet 470, dwelling 1090, family 1110, National Archives
Microfilm
M593, Roll 779.

It appears like this in the end notes:

United States. Census Office, Ninth Federal Census: 1870 Population
Schedule
(Washington, D.C.: The National Archives, 1962, 1968). Louis C Clerk
household, Weston Post Office, Platte County, Missouri, sheet 470,
dwelling
1090, family 1110, National Archives Microfilm M593, Roll 779.

It's not according to Elizabeth Shown Mills, but no one should have
trouble
finding the entry. All the essentials for looking it up are there.

family tree

Would someone show me an example of how you source a U.S. Census item.
More
specifically, I have a lot of ancestors who lived in the same county.
Actually, I have ancestors families who are on the same census page. I'm

really uncertain if I would, say for example, make more than one 1860
source
in my "master source" list if I have more than one ancestor in the same
county, or even the same census page. Also, if each one is a separate
source, do you list the ancestor's name first so you can keep them
apart?

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help me on this.

Jim
