For any item that is questionable, I add a "#" to the entry. It adds only one character to the entry and all the similar items (city, etc) still sort together, with the verified items in one group and the questionable items in another group. For the Location example, it would be Bridgeport#, Plymouth Colony. Since there are no spaces, there is no confusion about which item the tag is associated with.
I also use the # when there is any question about the content of a digital image (remember that Windows won't let you use a "?" in a file name): SmithJohn_age4#.jpg SmithJohn_SmithMary_SmithAlbert#.jpg Memphis_WhiteStreet_looking_West_1957#.jpg Using the Windows search capability, I can quickly find all images with uncertain data.
