Marilyn, With anything like this you should include whatever you feel is appropriate to yourself. As it happens I do record dates in the ToDos when I look for information relating to them, whether the search was successful or not, because it suits the way I work; it may not be the way other people record things though.

The one factor that would tell me I need to date these entries, would be the amount of new material being added to sites. For instance I had an occasion to go back to Ancestry to locate death information I had found there previously. The first time there I found an index card for the death of a great aunt. When I returned to look at the information again, I found two listings for the death information and one was a copy of the actual death certificate. So does anyone include the dates you failed to find infromation on your to-do lists? You could record negative searches in the to-do list (especially since you can attach to-dos to individuals) but I see two problems with this: 1) You can't readily see this. You would have to open up the to-do window and go through all of the closed tasks to see what you have searched that had negative results 2) When you print a report these negative searches will not be shown. I think this is important for other researcher to see this so that they don't duplicate your efforts. Here is an example of a negative search entry... According to James C. Simmons' grandson Houston Simmons, James died at his home. His home was located in the Black Creek area of Lamar Co, MS (no longer exists). The Complete Book of Lamar County, Mississippi Cemeteries does not record James' burial. Even though Grantham Cemetery is listed in this book, the compiler of this family history went to Grantham to look for a possible grave for James since this is where most of his immediate family is buried; nothing was found. A search of the old home site was also searched for evidence of a family cemetery; nothing was found. A search of the Hattiesburg American newspaper past issues did yield James' obituary but the cemetery was not named. All six of James' living grandchildren were contacted and none are able to say where James was buried (all are in the 90s). Of course all of this would be footnoted (the interview of Houston was conducted in 1976, the book info, the interviews with the 6 remaining grandchildren etc) in the final report but that has to be added by hand. michele ----- Original Message ----- From: "Nancy Bender" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: " [email protected]" <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, December 11, 2007 9:01 AM Subject: [LegacyUG] recording negative results in the To Do list I am looking for suggestions on how to record negative results in the To Do list. I have not used the list much and would like to as I do find that I occasionally go back to sources I already checked. When creating a To Do item, I see a place for Repository, but how would I record more than one place? I may look at several books &/or websites in search of one record, say a marriage record. I would rather not create a separate To Do item for each repository if I am looking for the same item at each one. What are some ways to record all the places I have looked? Thank you.
