When you say "do it properly", what they're actually doing is, as is your
ISP, allowing 'Spoofed' email through. When you send an email to the list it
goes to the list servers and then out to the list members, including you.
That return message purports to come from you but is not from your address.
That is Spoofed and should NOT be allowed through. I run my own email server
(Exchange) at home and it blocks such messages unless I set a rule. It seems
gmail, etc. are blocking them too. Ok, it's convenient that you get them if
you're on a mailing list but it is not correct.
Most of your spam is from spoofed addresses (they could use your address),
'cos they don't want to be tracked down. If all spoofed emails were blocked
a lot of them would be out of business. Until they came up with another way
of course.

  Dave.
