Myrna, Sense I have never used RM I cannot comment on it. I do know that the current Legacy does not have a charting function so she is correct on statements #1 and #2. As far as # 3 goes I am assuming she means that Legacy creates only 2 files for a database. As far as I am concerned having only one file (or 2)to worry about is a plus. The Legacy .fdb database file is really the only thing you need to transport your file and the other stuff is just fluff. I am an officer in the local Genealogical society. Every year we have an expo and I set up multiple laptops with several different programs to show the pubic (TMG, FTM, CLOOZ Etc.) and always push Legacy. I switched years ago from FTM and never looked back. For me the sourcing capabilities ease of use and flexibility of reports is of primary concern.
Now, back to your #1 and #2. It is my understanding that the new Legacy 7 will have charting capabilities so the top down tree is covered. A top down tree is one where there is an ancestor at the top with his spouse both in boxes of attached by lines. Below him (her) are their children ( to show descendents) with a line attaching them, Below that is their children with lines attaching and so forth. That's #1 and #2 is the ability to move the boxes or people around to help the program, when necessary make a better looking tree. I can only assume that Legacy 7 will do this. My 2nd Great Grand Father had three wives and 19 children so his tree is very wide and large. In essence you can only guide folks to the programs you think best. Don't try to convert someone with there mind made up. Just remember to show them this web site: http://genealogy-software-review.toptenreviews.com/ Hope that helps, G.C. Oliver Athens, Ga. It consists of about 5 knowledgeable people on computers and genealogy and 25 or so people that have some knowledge of computers and none on genealogy. We also have several that *may* know how to turn on a computer. At our next meeting several of us will be presenting different genealogy software packages. Even though I am definitely not an expert I opened my big mouth and said I would present Legacy (since I am the ONLY one here that uses it). Others will be presenting PAF, FTM, and RootsMagic. I have downloaded and burned copies of the standard version to pass out to anyone who wants to try it (with permission from Sherry). Another person has put together a matrix of the differences in the software packages. The only one that comes anywhere near Legacy is RootsMagic (which I had tried but did not like). In her matrix she has a few statements that confused me and I wanted to get some of your opinions. 1) traditional top-down tree (what is it?) 2) drag and drop charting (since I don't do charting I have not idea) 3) number of data files (she lists 2 for Legacy and 35 for RM) She says Legacy does not have these capabilities and RM does. Since I am trying to convince everyone to use Legacy over the other programs I need all the help I can get. And please remember - I am a person who HATES to speak in front of others. Even writing about it gives me the shakes. So, anyone out there care to help this old lady convince others how great Legacy is? What would be really nice is if someone took a vacation and came down here to present it - unpaid of course :-))) Thanks, Myrna in beautiful, sunny, warm, Mexico Legacy User Group guidelines: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Etiquette.asp Archived messages: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyfamilytree.com/ Online technical support: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Help.asp To unsubscribe: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/LegacyLists.asp Legacy User Group guidelines: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Etiquette.asp Archived messages: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyfamilytree.com/ Online technical support: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Help.asp To unsubscribe: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/LegacyLists.asp
